Portland icon celebrates 21 years of operation with yet another record

THE magnificent seven… It was only fitting that these seven men were invited to cut the 21st birthday cake for Portland Cable Trams at the Portland Golf Club on Saturday night, as they were the seven whose financial guarantees ensured the no-iconic project went ahead. Longtime chairman Des Hein did the honours, joined here by Neville Doodt, Ken Douglass, Ian Moody, Rusty Churchill, Mel Bartlett (partly obscured) and Phil Ruge. The cake itself was made by longtime volunteer Pam Reitman and decorated by another cable trams stalwart Edna Uniacke.
